Arlington, Va., April 25, 2012—While in Bangladesh, WRAP’s newly minted President & CEO, Mr. Avedis Seferian, met with the Leathergoods and Footwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association of Bangladesh (LFMEAB) on Thursday, April 12. Mr. Seferian and LFMEAB’s President, Mr. Syed Nasim Manzur, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Cooperative Agreement. The MoU committed the two organizations to a collaborative relationship dedicated to promoting socially responsible manufacturing by producers through sound commercial practices and compliance with WRAP Principles and training. WRAP will assist the LFMEAB in the promotion of Bangladeshi leathergoods and footwear exports to importing countries around the world. In addition to public endorsement and cooperation, WRAP and the LFMEAB will work together to disseminate information about the WRAP certification program, ensure the promotion of labor standards and lawful and ethical manufacturing, and share information between the two organizations. “The LFMEAB has been very active in seeking out best practices to help promote their members’ competitiveness in the export markets. Signing this MoU is another step in keeping with the leadership this organization has shown. I am very happy to be working with the LFMEAB to promote social compliance in the leathergoods and footwear sectors in Bangladesh, and look forward to a long and successful partnership,” said Mr. Seferian. The LFMEAB was equally positive about the new agreement between the two groups. “The LFMEAB is committed to improving the competitiveness and sustainability of Bangladesh’s leather and footwear exports. We believe our collaboration with WRAP will enhance our competitive advantage and increase awareness among our members about global best practices. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship,” said Mr. Mansur.
